This trap will most likely occur in abandoned locations where you'll stumble across decorative suits of armor lining the halls, or within the armory. It's most effective when you have players who are jonesing for better armor.
Here's the setup: (.Note: I haven't set any hard stats or DC's. I leave that up to you depending on how mean you want to be). The party is exploring an abandoned fort or keep. Up until this point they've spotted various decorative suits of plate, but they're rusted to the point of being useless. They enter the room where the trap is laid. Here is the description:Against the far wall you see two suits of armor flanking the door.
The full plate is still in good condition. There is rust at the joints, but otherwise the steel is gleaming and everything is intact. They look as if they'll fit a medium sized human.
Should the players choose to investigate the armor, a successful roll will reveal that the rust at the joints is actually dried blood. Opening one of the suits reveals the decaying remains of whoever wore it last. Anyone who investigates the remains will notice that the bones/flesh are scored with small holes, as if they had been pierced by hundreds of tiny daggers. Stranger still, one of the bodies in the suits is facing the wrong way, as if they tried to wear it backwards. The trap is triggered as soon as someone touches the inside of the armor, either from trying to put it on or investigating it with their hands. The armor is animated, and immediately attempts to grapple the closest person, trying to force their body into itself.
The pieces of the armor open and shut around the limbs of its victim, encasing them within. Once trapped, the person inside has no control over the armor unless they pass an incredibly difficult strength check. Once fully encased, the victim suddenly feels stabbing pain all over their body, as the armor produces sharp spikes along the interior to pierce the flesh and prevent escape.
Worse still, the armor will attempt to trap its victim regardless of which direction they are facing. If they are locked in the suit backwards, they must immediately pass the strength check to fight the armor's movement. Otherwise, their joints are all bent backwards as the armor moves to fight, breaking their knees, elbows, fingers, etc. As they are wrenched in the wrong direction. To be freed, the armor must either be destroyed, or pried open.
Any attacks against the armor will also harm whoever is inside. Prying open is the safer option, but more difficult as the wearer is hooked in by the spikes and the armor will fight whoever tries to grapple it. A very difficult strength check is required to wrench open the plates, and another check is required to actually pull the victim free, tearing their flesh as they are ripped from the spikes.
The victim will take bleeding damage every round that the are trapped. The armor will fight anyone who attacks or tries to pass the door/chest/what-have-you that it is guarding. It fights until destroyed. Otherwise, it will stand guard as the person within shrieks and bleeds to death, their blood oozing from every joint.Thoughts? One caveat:If you manage to overpower the armor, it will subside and become dormant.
Trying to remove the armor once again makes it go insane and start attacking you again.Once it calms down, the armor gives up on trying to kill you and instead will occasionally drink some of your blood, but if the PC manages to eat often enough and stay healthy (and they have a high enough HP pool to live through this) they can get by.At this point they will realize this is one of the best suits of armor you can wear, as they form a bond with it the armor will begin protecting its host (since it does provide a never ending supply of food)You form a symbiotic bond with the mimic. Sometimes during combat, when you would normally take a heavy blow the armor will take over and move you itself to dodge the attack to protect you and itself.Furthermore you cannot be caught flat footed, as the armor is aware of 360 degrees, so any attacks from beyond will be noticed by the armor. It should also be noted that the armor actually really likes getting polished, and doing so will make it shiver in joy. After a good polishing and a large amount of feeding you will realise underneath the dirt and grime is a fantastically beautiful plate mail, and on even further inspection you will see the 'plate mail' is actually thousands of small scales covering a hard shell which sits on a thick hide.
